Navigating a sober reality in the day to day after detox or treatment is a trip in itself. The void between the old you and your new life can leave you feeling lost, triggered and lonely. Set yourself up for success and put someone in your corner. Someone to help you make a plan, develop a secure attachment with and connect you with people aligned with your greatest and highest good.
Being sober in this intense world takes great courage. We often go from the outside in and shifting gears to the inside out takes practice and patience.
I want you to know that you can do this….
I was 59 years old working in a treatment centre for minimum wage, my 25 year business was gone, my glory days of drinking and drugging gone and compressed into a solitary lonely habit of self medicating daily to stay numb. Grace had given me an amazing wife and beautiful son who stuck with me through the turmoil, and now a new start with a job at a treatment centre where I gradually learned the tools of Recovery.
A group of men rallied around me from the centre to guide me through the first giddy part of my journey to sanity. A good friend dragged me into a yoga class where I started to find a release for the angst of my inability to deal with “me” without “my medicine”. In the beginning I just kept going because I felt better and I stayed sober.
Then, with willingness and the help of friends, meetings, coaches, sponsors, yoga teachers, mentors and my truly patient wife I felt my life shift and for the first time I felt a clarity and connection I had never known. I celebrate 10 years of sobriety this year. The craving for any substance has vanished and my souls purpose becomes clearer every day.
My 15 years working in the treatment centre put me in touch with some of the best counsellors in the country, working with literally thousands of men and women just like me starting their journey of recovery. The journey after treatment takes courage, trust, commitment and a willingness to ask for help.
I am blessed to be able to work with folks wherever they are at in the healing process of Recovery. I have studied with amazing teachers like Tommy Rosen and Nikki Myers who have shown me the transformative power of yoga and meditation in Recovery. I believe it is impossible to navigate this path alone and in my experience community and connection is what we need to heal.
