Registered Clinical Counselling

Socrates believed that the unexamined life was not worth living. Only in striving to come to know ourselves and to understand ourselves do our lives have any meaning or value.

Similarly, clinical counselling involves a working relationship with an expert guide who is uniquely positioned to help you uncover innate wisdom and discover self-knowledge to live a meaningful life, bereft of regret and unrealized potential… OR if you just need a tune-up, no need to make the “noble choice” in the face of death like good ol’ Socrates, just book an appointment to get back on track.

*We work within our scope of expertise, which does not include active suicidality, psychosis or personality disorders. If you are suffering from one of these issues please see your healthcare provider for an appropriate referral.*

Areas of specialty
Stress + Addiction

A little stress in our lives can help us get things done, focus and even motivate us to make significant life changes for the better… but when it gets to be too much it often leads to “distress” a negative state that actually causes many of the stress-related health problems we struggle with, including substance misuse and addictions. In counselling, we focus on the non-medical aspects of stress-related health problems and addiction, that create and fuel maladaptive behaviours and mental states.

Healthcare Professional Health + Wellness

Research shows that those with a better ability to empathize and be compassionate are at a higher risk of developing secondary stress disorder or compassion fatigue. The poor health and burnout that can result affects us both personally and professionally. We specialize in helping Healthcare Professionals, whether you are looking for a critical incident debrief, navigating a complaint or need another perspective for a personal issue, we know where you’re coming from.

Love and Relationships

Relationship endings and transitions can be times of great strain but also of accelerated growth. Intimacy reactions, attachment insecurity, rekindling attraction and getting over your ex is what we do best.

Existential Angst

Existential Angst is a normal, natural side effect of being alive and tends to occur during different life cycles, whether in your 20’s or mid-life. Something is off and you can’t quite put your finger on it. A low-level anxiety that never leaves. A sense that your life should be more than it is. Exploring this can lead to meaningful and fruitful insights.

Men’s Issues

Have you lost your way; have you lost your balls; have you lost your balls along the way? Get ‘em back! Maybe it’s time to upgrade your operating system and stop waiting for things to go back to the way they were… Let’s work together to get you back in the game.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect at my first appointment?
After you’ve settled on a therapist, figured out your insurance, and scheduled an appointment, it’s time to have your first session. Even if you’re confident about your decision to start therapy, it’s normal to feel apprehensive about this initial meeting, especially if you’ve never undergone therapy before and aren’t sure what to expect. Keep in mind, though, that the purpose of the first session is to help you and your therapist get to know each and to help you decide if you think the relationship will be a good fit. While it can often be nerve-wracking to sit down with someone new, it’s an important step on the process toward mental well-being. You will be warlmy welcomed by email prior to arrival and upon booking you will be automatically be sent an counselling intake/consent form to complete before your appointment for your therapist to review before your virtual or in-person session.
What is the protocol during COVID-19?
Provincial orders are always changing so we will send you a confirmation email before your session with up to date procedures to prepare you for your visit. While our no-show fees remain the same, we have relaxed our cancellation and rescheduling fees for clients who are feeling un-well. Medical masks, social distancing, an addiction consent form and a COVID-19 screening 12 hours prior to your visit are mandatory for in-person counselling. Currently we have very limited in-person availability as we have transitioned mostly to virtual care. If you have any questions, please feel welcome to reach out!
How do I choose a counsellor?
One of the best ways to choose a counsellor is by watching their bio video and reading their write-up. You can find the button for this under the "Meet Our Clinical Counsellors" heading just below the FAQ's section. If you're still uncertain or just on the fence don't hesitate to contact us and we can help find the best fit for you. While training and credentials should be reviewed, studies indicate that the most important factor is the therapeutic bond, alliance or the relationship the client develops with the therapist and their ability to work together to achieve the client’s goals.
What benefits can I expect?
The sky's the limit! seriously, we have seen it all - from feeling life is bearable again to full blown transformation. A good measure of what to expect is usually based on what you put it in. Often our clients report they have begun to live more authentically, having found new meaning and purpose. Sometimes the greatest benefit is facing and overcoming fears that seemed insurmountable when faced alone. Keep in mind Socrates dictum "The unexamined life may not be worth living..."
Are there any risks to be aware of?
Awareness can be a nightmare. We avoid, suppress and deny parts of ourselves in order to cope with the stress of everyday life. When we first start to work on ourselves it can feel exciting and hopeful. Nonetheless, at times it may feel overwhelming, unpleasant and scary. We often have to let go of things like old habits, identities, and relationships, which are resistant to change. This can be hard at first, especially when we don't know how to let them go.
How many sessions do I need?
Most people find that 5 sessions is a good place to start to do a piece of work. We try to tailor the number of sessions to our clients life circumstances and how deep they are willing to go. We have people who come for shorter and longer periods as needed. Some people just like to come in for a "touch up" whenever things are particularly stormy or when they need to prioritize self-care. We are pretty chill and there is no minimum number of sessions or long term commitments necessary.
What type of modalities are for me?
Our therapists use a variety of modalities, so it's best to check with the individual therapist if you are looking for a specific modality or therapeutic orientation. What research has shown is that in many cases it's not the specific modality which makes the biggest difference but the therapeutic bond itself that is most critical.
Do I have to pay if I have extended health benefits?
Yes and no. You pay at the time of booking. After your session you will receive a receipt with your counsellors registration number, which you submit to your extended health plan. Depending on your extended health plan, you will be reimbursed accordingly. Please check with your insurance company prior to booking to find out if you are covered for Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). Ask how much coverage you are eligible for and if you have to pay a deductible. Also, keep in mind most plans have a maximum you can claim per year, which does not roll-over so use it or lose it. If you have any concerns or questions please get in touch.
Client Confidentiality

Our therapists have a fundamental ethical responsibility to take every reasonable precaution to respect and to safeguard their clients’ right to confidentiality. The exceptions to this are clearly communicated and defined in the intake process.
