Kundalini Yoga is a dynamic, powerful tool that is designed to strengthen the nervous system, regulate the glandular system and stimulate immunity. It is a powerful way to increase vitality and reduce chronic stress, burnout and depression.
The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for intense physical activity and is often referred to as the fight-or-flight response. The parasympathetic nervous system has almost the exact opposite effect of rest and digest. It relaxes the body and inhibits or slows many high energy functions. Kundalini Yoga uses breath manipulation, visualization, mind concentration, movement and mantra to train the nervous system how to come out of fight-or-flight more quickly and relax more deeply.
It is a potent and profound practice that is a syncretism, combining the tradition of Yoga with other schools of Hindu and Sikh Dharma. Yogi Bhajan, a controversial character, the Master of Kundalini Yoga, was born of a Sikh father and Hindu mother and had a Catholic school education. His father was a medical doctor and his Dharma was to take ancient yogic postures and techniques, attached them to Tantric theories and Sikh mantras and synthesise a potent form of Yoga that we train in, practice and teach. It is called Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®.
Yogi Bhajan arrived in the United States in 1969 with a stated purpose: “I have come to create Teachers, not to gather disciples.” For over 30 years, he traveled internationally teaching Kundalini Yoga, the Yoga of Awareness. Through The Aquarian Teacher Program, Yogi Bhajan has trained thousands of KRI Certified Kundalini Yoga Teachers. In 1994, the International Kundalini Yoga Teachers Association, (IKYTA), was formed to further spread these priceless teachings through the united efforts of Kundalini Yoga teachers worldwide.
Kundalini Yoga is a yoga for householders, for people who have to cope with the daily challenges and stresses of holding jobs, raising families, and managing businesses. It is a yogic technology for anyone who wants the skills to cope successfully with the challenges of our times.
“The process of growth through Kundalini Yoga is a natural unfolding of your own nature. The blocks to that growth are your attachments to the familiarity of the past, and your fear of the expanded Self. As you practice Kundalini Yoga you will grow. Like a snake you will need to shed old skins to be more of who you are.” – Yogi Bhajan
